Fractional Financial Controller

Financial Controller expertise. Without the full-time hire.

Senior enough to lead it. Hands-on enough to do it. For businesses that need stronger ownership, reporting and control, but aren't ready for, or don't need, a full-time permanent hire.

Why this, and not a hire

Reporting ownership and technical judgement, in the same relationship.

Most fractional-controller offers centre on reporting ownership, month-end oversight and cash visibility. The difference here is technical accounting oversight sitting inside the same role, so the person running your reporting process can also work through the judgement calls, rather than escalating them elsewhere.

Scope

What's included, and what isn't.

Typically included

  • Month-end ownership and improvement
  • Management reporting and reporting packs
  • Balance sheet control and reconciliations
  • Financial controls and finance-process improvement
  • Cash flow and working capital oversight, where agreed
  • Year-end planning and coordination
  • Group reporting
  • Technical accounting oversight
  • Supporting and developing finance teams
  • Supporting the FD or CFO
  • Finance projects, transformation and periods of change

Normally outside scope

  • Routine bookkeeping, payroll and tax return preparation, unless separately arranged
  • Audit or assurance work
  • Legal advice
  • Major technical projects requiring standalone documentation, scoped separately under Technical Accounting Advisory
  • CFO-level fundraising, investor relations or M&A leadership, unless specifically agreed
Engagement models

Three ways this typically works.

Ongoing fractional support

Rolling

An agreed number of days each week or month, for as long as it's useful to your business.

Interim FC cover

Defined period

Full Financial Controller cover for a set period, for example maternity leave, a departure, or a transition between hires.

Project-based FC support

Clear start and end

Focused support for a specific reporting, controls or finance-improvement need, with a defined scope and end point.

How it's structured

Days, not diagnoses.

Typically anywhere from a day a month to a couple of days a week, depending on the size and stage of your business. The final structure, and the fee, follows a conversation about your finance function rather than a rate card.

A complex acquisition paper, major technical memorandum or similar project doesn't automatically disappear into the fractional fee. It's separately scoped and priced under Technical Accounting Advisory, so the fractional role stays focused on ownership and delivery.
